Shaped by the sea

Historically, we are sea adventurers — fishermen, whalers, traders and privateers. And to make those livelihoods possible, shipwrights. Today, Bermudian seamanship can be seen in our annual yacht and fitted dinghy races.

An eye for business

Bermudians have also long been entrepreneurial. In the 19th century, with the beginning of steamships, our businessmen foresaw the opportunities for tourism. In the 20th century, we laid the foundations for Bermuda’s highly successful international businesses.

Our affluence can be explained by our willingness to accept and adapt to change. But while we value hard work, we hold just as dear our reputation for friendliness, hospitality and play. It is yet another reason why visitors keep returning to our island paradise.
