Emmy-nominated actress is a multi-talented and versatile actress + comedienne of television and feature films. She has worked side by side with some of the biggest talents in the entertainment industry.
Whitley got her big break when she became an understudy for playwright Shelly Garrett's popular touring theatrical production of "Beauty Shop." After nights of watching the play as an understudy, she became anxious to perform; so she created a church lady character-Sister Rosemary- and carved a part for herself in the play. Impressed with Whitley's talent and creativity, Garrett asked her to helm his next production, "Living Room," hiring her as an assistant director before promoting her to director. She toured with the production for four years, and met some contacts and friends along the way. Whitley landed her next gig-the role of Ms. Pigney on Nickelodeon's "My Brother and Me"-compliments of her cousin, Calvin Brown Jr., who was the creator and writer of the show. She left Los Angeles to do the show at the Nickelodean studios in Orlando, Florida. The show lasted one season, and she returned to Hollywood, and began auditioning again. She landed the role of the sassy Darcie Mayberry on UPN's "Sparks." Soon, other television roles followed, including appearances on "Married with Children," "The Wayans Bros.," and "Moesha." Whitley flexed her creative muscle as a producer when BET greenlit her project, "Oh Drama," a steamy gossip talk show, co-hosted with Vanessa Bell Calloway and Mari Marrow. Given complete creative freedom, Whitley wore several hats: the creator, producer and co-host of the show. Other television credits include "Standoff," "Grey's Anatomy," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "That's So Raven," "The Parkers," and the animated series "The Boondocks." She received Emmy nods for her role as a sassy hooker in "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Whitley has also held her own in such feature films as "Fun With Dick and Jane," "The Perfect Man,""Along Came Polly," "Deliver Us from Eva;" and "Next Friday." Whitley also lends her voice to the new children's animated series, "Thugaboo," created by Keenan, Shawn and Marlon Wayans set to air on Nickelodean and Nicktoons. Currently, Whitley is shooting an ABC pilot-an untitled Sachs/Judah comedy project-about life at a law firm. She also appears in the untitled HBO project of grammy-winning rapper/producer Kanye West. On the big screen, she will appear in "The Salon." She just recently wrapped on Reed R. McCant's independent film "Cuttin da Mustard." Whitley just started her own production company, Kwick Whit Productions, and has several projects in development. Also, along with her comedic partner, Buddy Lewis, she co-hosts a comedy room, called "Whacked Out Wednesday," which is a night of stand-up and improve comedy, held at the Sierra's Cafe' in Studio City, Ca. |
